A
person who does any kind of manual work with the object of earning his living
is called a day laborer. The life of a day laborer is marked by extreme
adversity and hardship. His life is full of uncertainty since he is not sure of
getting any work tomorrow. Generally he is a man without any land and
property of his own. He exchanges his manual labor on the basis of daily
payment. He is assigned to different work in different fields in accordance
with his strength and ability. He gets up early in the morning and sets out in
search of work. He has to work as per the instruction of his employer and gets
his wage at the end of the day. He is absolutely dependent on his daily work.
“No work, no wages”- such is the fate of a day laborer. If he gets more work,
he earns more. When he earns more than usual, his joy knows no bounds. He and
family members can eat to their heart’s content. But difficulty arises when he
does not get any work. Then he and his family have to go without food. The life
of a day laborer is painful indeed. In spite of working hard all day long, he
only just makes his both ends meet. Sorrows and sufferings are his constant
companions. He can barely enjoy peace and pleasure. His miseries reach their
climax when he gets ill. It is true that the rich and privileged class of our
country do not estimate his services at all. It is our duty to recognize his
services as it should be and do something for him in order that he may live a
peaceful life.
