Rules of Capitalization

The rules of capitalization are applied in the following cases:


1.     Capitalize the beginning letter of a sentence.

Example: There are great many kinds of Birds and animals in the world.

2.     A proper noun begins with a capital word.

Example: New York City is regarded as the busiest city in the world.

               We know Nelson Mandela for his fight against apartheid.

3.     Capitalize the adjectives or words which are derived from proper noun.

Example: British people are quite friendly.

                 I love to eat Chinese foods.

4.     We capitalize a person’s title when it precedes the name.

Example: Justice Sam had given capital punishment to the criminal.

                 Prof. Dr. Moin Khan is our new Chairman.

5.     Capitalize the first letter of days of the week, months and public holidays.

Example: I will try to meet you on Sunday.

               Our result is expected to be published in December.          

               The Christians celebrate the Easter Sunday with religious festivities.

6.     The first word inside a quotation must be capitalized.

Example: The teacher said to the boy, “Have you gone through the chapter?”

7.     Capitalize the first word of a title when it is used as a direct address.

Example:  May I come in, Doctor?

8.     Capitalize the points of the compass when they refer to specific regions.

Example: He hails from South Africa.

               The people of West Indies are friendly and peace loving.

9.     The title of organizations, institutions must be capitalized.

Example: Dhaka University is called the “Oxford of the East”.

               The aim of Poverty Fighter Foundation is to fight against poverty.

10.            The titles of books, films, plays or publications are always capitalized. In such cases, other words including verbs are also capitalized. But little words such as a, an, the, but, as etc are never capitalized.

Example: I have gone through the book “Things Fall Apart’.

               Gone with the Wind is an American film produced by David O. Selznick. 

11.            Capitalize the first letter of a salutation.

Example: Dear Sir:
               I would like to inform you…….

12.            The names of course title are capitalized.

Example: John failed in English 103.

13.            Pronoun ‘I’ and interjection.

Example: You know better what I want.

                Phew, what have I done!

14.            Names of religions, groups and races.

Example: It is the teaching of Islam not to inflict pain on anybody.   
                 
15.            When an inanimate object is personified.

Example: O Death! You really have no heart.

16.            The name of Allah (God) and pronoun used instead of the name are always capitalized.

Example: May Allah grant you good health.

               God always shows His grace toward human beings.

17.            Capital letters are used in the Names of newspapers and magazines.

Example: The Daily Star is the most widely read newspaper of our country.

18.            Capitalize the title of family if it precedes the name.

Example: I know Aunt Betty has had an accident recently.

                He will probably attend the party organized by Uncle James.

Where capital words are not used


1.     Don’t capitalize the points of compass.

Example: He lives in south London.

2.      Do not capitalize the names of seasons.

Example: Mango is a fruit of summer season.

3.     Do not capitalize the titles when they follow the names.

Example: David, the chairman of the company, have resigned yesterday.
